How Will Generative AI Change Humanities Research?

Abstract

This study examines how the emergence of generative AI is transforming the essence and methodology of humanities research while exploring academic responses to these changes. It critically analyzes the changes brought by AI throughout the research process, including research ideation, assistance, paper evaluation, and research dissemination, and discusses their structural impact on the academic ecosystem. The findings reveal that while AI shows potential to enhance research efficiency and creativity in humanities, it also poses risks of weakening researcher autonomy and critical reflection. To address these challenges, this study proposes three directions: first, reestablishing the autonomous role of researchers and academic societies; second, strengthening academic publicness through open access and research data sharing; and third, developing new research models for human-AI collaboration. Through these proposals, this study derives institutional and practical tasks for sustainable development of humanities in the AI era.

이 연구는 생성형 AI의 등장이 인문학 연구의 본질과 방법론을 어떻게 변화시키고 있는지 분석하고, 이에 대한 학술계의 대응 방향을 모색한다. 특히 연구 발상, 연구 보조, 논문 평가, 연구 대중화 등 연구의 전 과정에서 AI 활용이 가져오는 변화를 검토하고, 이것이 학술 생태계에 미치는 구조적 영향을 비판적으로 논의한다. 연구 결과, AI는 인문학 연구의 효율성과 창의성을 높일 수 있는 가능성을 보여주지만, 동시에 연구의 주체성과 비판적 성찰의 약화라는 위험도 수반한다. 이러한 도전에 대응하기 위해 본 연구는 세 가지 방향을 제시한다. 첫째, 연구자와 학술단체의 주체적 역할 재정립, 둘째, 오픈액세스와 연구데이터 공유를 통한 학술 공공성의 강화, 셋째, 인간-AI 협력의 새로운 연구 모델 개발이다. 이를 통해 AI 시대 인문학의 지속가능한 발전을 위한 제도적, 실천적 과제들을 도출한다.
