Abstract

“Meongteongguri” is Korea’s first newspaper-serialized four-panel comic, meticulously restored a century later through the combined efforts of KAIST digital humanities researchers employing deep learning technology and rigorous historical verification. This monumental work transcends the boundaries of comic art to serve as a significant cultural, modern, and media historical document, vividly capturing the colonial reality of 1920–1930s Korea through its 744 episodes across 12 series. Featuring the adventures of the straightforward Choi Meongteong, his cunning friend Kkobung, and the enchanting courtesan Ttokttan, the comic offers a blend of comic romance, adventure, and sharp satire that critiques the oppressive colonial rule of the Japanese Governor-General’s office. The work employs archaic vocabulary and period slang to authentically reflect the everyday life and culture of colonial Koreans, ultimately delivering both humor and poignant social commentary that resonated with its contemporary audience and continues to fascinate readers today.

《멍텅구리》는 우리나라 최초의 신문 연재 네컷만화다. 연재가 시작된 지 100년이 지난 오늘, KAIST 디지털인문학 연구진이 데이터 과학과 인문학의 결합을 통해 딥러닝 기술과 철저한 고증 작업으로 발굴·복원해 공동 집필한 결과물이다. 이 작품은 충청도 만석꾼집 외아들로 ‘매사에 직진, 딱 하루만 사는 사내’ 키다리 최멍텅과 그의 절친이자 영악한 ‘꼬붕’인 땅딸보 윤바람, 그리고 최멍텅이 한눈에 반한 ‘똑딴(어여쁜)’ 평양 기생 신옥매를 중심으로 이야기가 전개된다. 총 744편의 에피소드와 12가지 시리즈로 구성된 이 작품은 기상천외한 사건들과 엉뚱한 발상으로 가득하며, 인생의 희로애락을 유쾌하게 담아냈다. 또한 일본의 식민 통치에 대한 풍자와 조롱이 경쾌한 시트콤처럼 펼쳐지며, 독자들에게 웃음과 통쾌함을 선사한다. 회를 거듭하면서 가벼운 코믹 만화를 넘어, 최멍텅의 실없는 농담과 행동 속에 조선총독부의 강압적인 식민 통치를 비판하는 풍자가 자연스럽게 녹아드는데 이는 나라 잃은 설움을 견디며 가난에 시달리던 조선인들에게 통쾌한 웃음으로 위로를 전한다.
《멍텅구리》는 1920~1930년대 한국 사회의 변화와 갈등, 역사 저술가들의 이념이나 선입견에 의해 편집되지 않은 날것 그대로의 식민지 현실을 고스란히 담아냈다. 또한 지금은 잘 쓰지 않는 옛 어휘와 당시의 유행어들이 포함되어 있어 100년 전 식민지 시대 조선인의 삶과 문화를 그대로 느낄 수 있다. 《멍텅구리》는 단순한 만화 작품을 넘어, 그 시대 사람들의 희로애락과 사회적 맥락을 포착한 문화사적·역사적 기록으로서의 가치를 지닌다.
